Built for students who
learn by understanding.
Solve by Photo started from a simple observation: students don’t struggle with effort — they struggle with access. Access to a clear explanation at the right moment, for the exact problem in front of them.
Our mission
We built Solve by Photo because the gap between “I’m stuck” and “I understand” shouldn’t require a tutor appointment, a textbook search, or an hour on YouTube. It should take a photo and ten seconds.
The tool exists to bridge that gap — not to replace learning, but to remove the friction that stops it. When a student can see every step of a solution, they stop guessing at the method and start building the pattern recognition that actually helps on exams.
We focus on step-by-step reasoning because answers without explanations are almost useless for learning. A number at the end of a solution teaches nothing. The method that leads there teaches everything.
The principles behind every decision
Method Over Answer
A correct answer you don’t understand is worth nothing on the next test. Every solution we show includes the full reasoning — not just the result.
No Friction, No Gates
No account required. No email. No subscription to see the basics. Students shouldn’t have to fight a signup wall when they’re 20 minutes from a deadline.
Photo First
Typing a physics diagram or a chemistry equation is slower than the problem itself. The camera is the fastest, most accurate input — so we built around it.
Privacy by Default
Photos are processed and discarded. No user data is stored, sold, or linked to an account. What you upload stays between you and the solution.
Accessible to Everyone
A student in Lagos and a student in London face the same textbook problem. The tool works the same for both — no geography, no premium tier required for basics.
Learning, Not Shortcutting
We show the full solution — including the steps — because understanding the process is the point. A tool that just hands you an answer is a worse teacher than no tool at all.
Why we built this
The idea behind Solve by Photo came from watching students try to get help with homework. The existing options were either slow (waiting for a tutor), expensive (Chegg subscriptions), incomplete (answer-only tools), or frustrating to use (typing equations into a text field that wasn’t built for math).
The camera changed what was possible. A student with a phone can photograph any problem — printed or handwritten, with or without a diagram — and have it read accurately in seconds. That’s a fundamentally different starting point than a text box.
We built the tool around photo input because it removes the translation step. You don’t need to know how to type a fraction inside a square root. You don’t need to describe a circuit schematic in words. You just show the problem.
The step-by-step output is non-negotiable for us. Other tools show a final answer and call it done. We think that’s the wrong product. An answer without reasoning is a shortcut. A solution with every step is a lesson. When a student can read through exactly how a problem was solved — formula selection, substitution, calculation, verification — they’re building the pattern recognition they need for the next problem they haven’t seen yet.
That’s what Solve by Photo is: not a shortcut, but a faster path to actually understanding.
